A 20-year-old student majoring in psychology has become an unlikely symbol of environmental activism, as he successfully cleanses a very polluted river in his native town of its trash and garbage.

Who Is Bittu Tabahi?

Bittu Tabahi is a social media handle name of Surendra Singh Choudhary, a BSc student from Biaora, Rajgarh district of Madhya Pradesh. Not having any institutional support, governmental support or even protective equipment, he decided to manually clean the very polluted Ajnar River in his hometown on January 26, 2026, the Republic Day of India, as a symbolic starting point of his mission.

At first, this activity was a collective enterprise, involving some friends of the student, but then other people quit, and only Bittu continued to collect plastic waste, bottles, algae and other debris of the river in order to cleanse it, making regular video and photo documentation of his actions on Instagram.

The Transformation That Went Viral

In early September 2026, the Instagram photos and videos of Bittu, presenting the transformation of the Ajnar River that occurred thanks to his efforts, went viral and attracted hundreds of comments of admiration from thousands of netizens, calling him their hero and a real life superhero. Industrialist Anand Mahindra used his story as his “Monday Motivation”.

The difference before and after was amazing – where the Ajnar River was a dumping ground, full of layers of garbage and contaminated water, now some parts of it looked more clear-flowed and cleaned banks, all of which was achieved by one person through his hard work.

Global Recognition and a Job Offer

Not stopping there, the story has gone global and the student has received a job offer from Boyan Slat, founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit organization working on cleansing the oceans from plastic. In his post on social media to the account of Bittu (@Surendr75950620), he wrote: “Come work for us.”

Why His Story Matters

There are several reasons to pay special attention to this story:

– Civic accountability – the student’s actions raised many questions regarding the municipal responsibility in this matter, as many asked why this river was polluted at all and why not municipal authorities have done anything to improve the situation;
– Youth agency: As a youth at the age of 20 years, he demonstrates how effective it could be to initiate an effort through utilizing whatever one has rather than waiting for permission and resources.
– Documented impact: Through posting regular updates, he succeeded in making changes documented and thus shareable.

He has also rebutted some criticisms that he sought to make viral what should have been done for real impact, stating that his efforts have been for long before the recognition came and that he still continues with the effort to clean not only the river but other polluted places in his locality.

What’s Next?

Up to early September 2026, Bittu had more than three lakhs followers on social media and regularly posted on his cleaning efforts. With the help of municipalities in removing wastes and international organizations showing their interest, his story may evolve from being a single-man project into something else which would become a template for environmental restoration initiatives.

The success story of an ordinary youth with no resources except a few tools and an idea that “someone has to begin” shows the power of individual effort through visibility and consistency.
