80’s Photos Trend: Privacy and Environmental Concern.

The AI ’80s photo craze has taken over social media feeds, turning simple selfies into glamorous 1980s-inspired portraits The trend has gone viral on Instagram, with influencers, celebrities and followers creating their own retro image. With AI image-generation software like ChatGPT and Google Gemini, the users reinvent themselves with huge hairstyles, fashionable clothes and jewellery, professional studio lighting, vintage film effects and bright colours.

A simple vintage filter becomes a lot of variation

Instead of launching a vintage filter with one click, users upload a photo and ask the AI to keep their face and skin colour but stylise everything else – their hairstyle, clothes, background and photographic style. Users also include instructions for colour saturation, softness and grain. Then, they can refine the image repeatedly with additional prompts, making AI portrait workshops accessible to even novice users.

A variety of influences and challenges

Many participants select different decades and understandings of the time period. Some opt for glamorous Bollywood looks, while others revisit their old family, college, wedding and magazine album snaps, or regional Italian, Malayali or Kerala themes, featuring traditional Bollywood clothes, accessories and studio backdrops. A typical prompt requests a retro look that still resembles the subject.

As many variations as possible

In a typical prompt, a user tells the AI to generate a 1980s-style portrait while still looking like the same person. They specify that the artist should apply a filter with saturated colours, studio lighting, a soft focus, grainy film effects, a big hairdo and a 1980s vibe. Thanks to the feature to change the image with follow-up prompts, the process is easy even for casual photographers.

The nostalgia factor

What’s attractive about the trend? Nostalgia is part of it. Young computer users, not yet old enough to remember the 1980s, are still drawn to the style and aesthetics of the period. The images provide a certain personalisation: instead of looking at their own childhood photos, the user takes on the identity of a different 1980s character.

The trend also mirrors the wider desire for digital nostalgia, where the beauty of vintage film-style photography is reproduced through modern technology. Grain, faded colours and manufactured studio backdrops are relics of the past in a time when nearly all images are precise, instant and all-digital.

What to be aware of when sharing

Behind the fun, there are privacy implications. An image of the face is personal and sharing that image with an AI company means giving away biometrically similar visual data to a technology platform. User experts recommend avoiding uploading images with identifiers or private data such as address or identity documentation, but a careful approach can mitigate some of the risks.

And users should also think about what image they are sharing with a given service in terms of what personal data it contains, the privacy policy, its availability on the service and how that image may be edited. Adjusting framing and resolution and using an image with less private data can help, but does not solve all privacy concerns.

The hidden cost of the environment

And on a more serious note, the activity stimulates debate over the environmental sustainability of AI image generators. Photorealistic image generation demands infrastructure, power and sometimes water to cool the systems. Even small moments of social sharing in the form of generated images have a much bigger environmental impact when scaled up to millions of new Instagram images each day.

All of this makes one more Instagram phenomenon the same as any other: trendy and fun, but with unintended social and environmental consequences. While any photo trend can spread across the internet at the speed of modern connectivity, user wisdom requires us to carefully consider how that playful 1980s aesthetic really impacts the planet and the personal data we share.
