After the NEET leak protests, themed around reforms in the education system due to consistent paper leaks and subsequent suicide cases, events took a pivotal turn as Dharmendra Pradhan resigned and Prahlad Joshi replaced him as Education Minister.

Geographical and Political Background

Prahlad Joshi was born in Vijayapura, Karnataka (1962). He began his political journey with activism related to the BJP and RSS and gained fame for spearheading the movement of hoisting the flag at Idgah Maidan in Hubballi (which was subsequently taken over by the municipal council). Later he was made the BJP president in Dharwad district and worked as the general secretary of the party in Karnataka between 2006 and 2013. It was in 2013 when he became the BJP president in Karnataka after entering national politics through the Dharwad Lok Sabha seat in 2004. He was re-elected in 2009, 2014 and 2019. Later he entered the Union Cabinet in 2019. He currently holds responsibilities of Ministry of Consumer affairs, food and distribution and Ministry of New and Renewable energy along with Education Ministry.

Product of Chaos or Ray of Hope?

Prahlad Joshi has taken the responsibility of the education ministry under the intense pressure of chaos and public outrage, however, his consistent electoral wins indicate possible improvements in the system.

Prahlad’s old statements and controversies are being highlighted amidst the current turn of events, which include:

1. His statement in 2023 resurfacing on the internet, where he suggested electricity cuts led to a rise in population during the Congress period.
2. His defense of the premature release of convicts in the Bilkis Bano rape case in Gujarat.
3. His statement during the Russia–Ukraine war: “Those (students) who have returned (from Ukraine), 90% of them won’t clear the entrance examinations.”

Such remarks raise concerns around the education system and women’s rights/safety, drawing heavy criticism and skepticism from the opposition and students.

Joshi’s assignment is uneasy and yet again proves that the authority has a practical approach to the current processes of development. He has to work within a problematic department, which was earlier tarnished by scandals about the leakage of test material, raising questions regarding the capability to deal with the above problems. In addition, his previous career is not beneficial for him, as recent scandals have led to evidence that presenting Joshi as a true reformer rather than an effective government manager will be quite tough.
